East Africa & Rhodesia - 24/5/56 - Colonel James Kenneth Matheson, of Kivoga, Sotik, died in hospital in Kenya last week [not acc. to Nat Probate Calendar] after a car accident. Born in Inverness in 1886, he joined the Lothians and Border Horse in 1905 and served with them until 1916, when, on the Western Front, he was transferred as a captain to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He served in France until the end of the war, being mentioned in despatches. When he retired from the Army in 1920 he went to Kenya to farm. Gradually he developed widespread business interests.
He joined the board of Jardine, Matheson & Co. (East Africa) Ltd., in 1939, and remained a director until the business was acquired in 1945 by Bovill Matheson & Co. Ltd. Then he became chairman of that company. In the following year he was elected chairman of J.W. Milligan & Co. Ltd. He had been a director of Buchanan's Uganda Estates Ltd., since 1939, and among other directorships were those of Nandi Tea Estates Ltd., Siret Tea Co. Ltd., Sotik Tea Co. Ltd., Kivoga Estate Ltd., Soy Settlements Ltd., Sunningdale (East Africa) Investments Ltd., Medwin Ltd., Azania Investment Co. Ltd., and Pearl Dry Cleaners Ltd. He had married in 1923 Rhoda May Scott, who survives him with one daughter
