General Information:

White Roots - 'My aunt Julia's husband, Uncle Charles Pohl. The Pohls had also arrived in Kenya before the war and my uncle's family came from the Eastern Cape, accompanied by his father and one of the uncles. His father Harry and Uncle Steyn both settled in the Eldoret area. This Cape family formed part of a progressive and prominent group of farmers and woolbrokers …… Uncle Charles was a highly cultured and friendly person, a real gentleman. The Pohls had moved to Kenya with a large selection of equipment, horses and other animals.  A famous stallion names, I think, Dunn Lawn which they also took with them had in about 1910 taken part in some prominent South African horse race which I am almost certain is today known as the Durban July.  This horse died of lymphangitis fever shortly after they arrived in Kenya.
' …The 1918 Spanish flu which swept through the world also hit this family very severely. Uncle Charles lost his parents and sister Almine. He progressed well with his farming on a very fertile area north-east of Eldoret. Aunt Julia produced delicious strawberries which she sold in Eldoret where she received popular support. Everything went well with them until like many others in Kenya and in fact over the entire world, he was wrecked by the Depression in the 1930s. In spite of all this he still remained calm and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. …'
