General Information:

Hobley - Some two years after my arrival (in Mombasa), in 1892, I took part in a lion hunt on the Island with my friend the late A.C.W. Jenner. Jenner was knocked over by the lion but only received a scratch on his arm which healed well.
Permanent Way - 'The Ogadens continued to give trouble for some years, culminating with the murder of Mr A.C.W. Jenner, the Sub-Commissioner of Kismayu, in the November of 1900. That outrage was revenged by a punitive expedition of some size, under the Command of Col. Trevor Ternan, who was Acting-Commissioner of the EA Protectorate during the interval between the departure of Sir Arthur Hardinge and the arrival of Sir Charles Eliot in December.
Moyse - In 1900 Jenner decided to explore the country in the direction of the Lorian Swamp. He was confident that friendship with the Ogaden was now established, and took with him only a small escort of 40 Herti police. ...... 16th November - Jenner's camp attacked and Jenner speared to death. 100 men of garrison despatched under Capt. H.W. Rattigan (KOSB) but rain forced them to return.
Kenya Diary - I heard an amusing story from Mann. 3 years ago [1899] he was serving in Jubaland with Jenner the Civil Officer, who was afterwards murdered by the Somali, and the soldier was St. John Wake. Now Jenner had a complete set of false teeth, Wake had a wooden leg, and Mann has but one eye. They were all three presiding at a big and important meeting at Kismayu on a particularly hot day. The proceedings got tedious so Jenner, feeling uncomfortable about the mouth, removed his teeth and placed them with a rattle on the table. The Somalis stared but said not a word. Soon afterwards Wake unscrewed his wooden leg and laid it beside Jenner's teeth on the table. As time went on, Mann found his false eye causing him discomfort, and removed it, tossed it in the air and put it in his pocket. This was too much for the savage Somalis, who rose to a man and fled from the white men who could thus play about with their teeth, legs and eyes. Lorian - The only white man who had ever attempted to go any great distance into the interior previous to my effort was a Mr Jenner. He had been Provincial Commissioner of Jubaland before Capt. Salkeld, and had not realised the treacherous nature of the Somalis, who, up to much later, had not experienced any punishment from the British Government for their many raids and murders. In consequence they despised the Administration, thinking we were afraid of them, and became more arrogant and warlike. Mr Jenner went out with a comparatively small escort, and, when camped near a place called Shimbirleh (the place of the birds), was set upon early one morning by a strongly armed Somali force and murdered, together with most of his following. A few managed to escape, and returned to Kismayu with the news.
White Man - remarked - 'each officer who came to EA should be given several medals on his arrival at Mombasa and one should be taken away for every campaign which he found it necessary to initiate in his district.' Ironically Jenner was murdered during Eliot's regime by the Somalis in Jubaland, and one of the most expensive punitive expeditions ever sent out in EA - troops were imported from India for it - was despatched to restore order after his death.

Nicholls - IBEAC had instituted a British court in Mombasa in 1890, presided over by an English barrister, A.C.W. Jenner (descendant of Edward Jenner of smallpox vaccination fame), who was later murdered in Jubaland in 1900.
Nicholls - son of a baronet St. George's Church, Durley, Botley near Portsmouth - The nave contains some interesting memorials especially that of Sir William Jenner (1815-98), who was Queen Victoria's Physician for 36 years and also President of the Royal College of Physicians. Nearer to the belfry is the memorial of one of his sons Arthur Charles William Jenner, Barrister at Law, who was Sub-Commissioner for Jubaland in East Africa and Vice-Consul at Kismayu. On the 16 November 1900 whilst making a tour of inspection he was "killed with nearly the whole of his escort in a treacherous attack on his camp by Ogaden Somali."
