R.B. Jolley - "My grandfather Thomas Henry Jolley who was born in Bombay 16/7/1863, was working for the Port Trust, Aden, when he married Eliza Bevan (b. 1866) on the 7 December 1892 at Christ Church, Steamer Point. Thomas and Eliza stayed in Aden till 1898, when Thomas moved to Mombasa, and joined the staff involved with the construction of the Uganda Railway. A year later, Eliza joined Henry with their two sons, who were born in Aden. Claude Bevan, 2 November 1893, and Norman Rhodes on 14 December 1895. There was also a daughter Winifred, born 1898, but being a sickly baby she died in Mombasa and was buried at Kisauni 10/4/1899. After he arrived Thomas was employed at the Railway offices as a stores Ledger Clerk 150 rupees p.m. as from 30/6/1898. Cyril Alfred was born 14/1/1899. By then Thomas's salary had been increased to 200 rupees p.m. from 30/6/1899. Ralph Noel was born 19/4/1900 3/1/1902, Thomas now on salary of rupees 240 p.m. served with 3 months' notice. 25/1/1902 transferred to Nairobi Police office as Head Clerk
In 1903 transferred back to Mombasa, Head Clerk, Police Dept. salary 2100 rupees p.m. It is possible that their 4 sons attended the Railway school in Nairobi when it opened 20/1/1904. It is thought Thomas retired from Govt. service about 1928, as he died in 1929 at Brentwood, Essex. Eliza died in the UK in 1936.
