General Information:

Playne - Burnscoombe Farm - Mr A. Gray first saw the light in Scotland, where he had farming experience, and, as a fact, he was born on a farm. Mr Gray's energy and enterprise led him to Swaziland, where he served in the Police. Then he came to BEA in 1904, and took Burnscoombe Farm, with Dr. F. Penny as a sleeping partner. The farm is in extent 10000 acres, of which one fifth is freehold. It is about 10 miles from Molo Station, and is undulating grazing land. There are 6 streams on the property, and plenty of timber - cedar and bamboos - for building purposes. The altitude is 8000 feet, with an average annual rainfall of 45 inches. A mile from the homestead is a very pretty waterfall, about 75 feet high. ....….…

He related the story that he and a friend, riding in a mule drawn buckboard cart within four miles of Nakuru on the Rongai/Nakuru road, witnessed a mass herd of zebra being stalked by a lion. When the zebra discovered a threat to their safety they all turned round, faced the lion as one, and then charged.
