General Information:

Police - On Jan 1st 1926, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police, continuing in that post until June 12th 1931, when he retired. He had served with distinction for 22 years. On numerous occasions Lumley was specially mentioned and commended for his excellent work to the Governor  and also to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. In April 1914, he was awarded the King's Police Medal for meritorious service when dealing with stock thefts in the Kiambu district. He was held in the highest esteem by all, both in and outside the Force. The well-merited award of the Imperial Service Order in 1930 was a fitting recognition of his valuable services to the Force and to Kenya Colony. ........ When Commissioner Spicer went to Palestine in June. 1931, he assumed command of the Kenya Police until the arrival of the new Commissioner R.C.A. Cavendish. Lumley then retired before the new Commissioner's arrival in October 1931.

Web DNW - He served in the South African Constabulary until 1908, and was public prosecutor and justice of the peace at Heidelberg from 1904. He joined the East African Police in 1909 and served in East Africa throughout the Great War, becoming superintendent of the Kenya Police in 1919. He was acting assistant commissioner, Kenya Police, at various periods 1920-24, was appointed assistant commissioner in 1925, and deputy commissioner in 1926. Lumley was appointed acting commissioner of the Kenya Police in 1927 and created a Companion of the Imperial Service Order in 1930.
