Extracts from letters to his brother Barney - 6 Dec 1949 - I want to wish you and your family a happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. It was good to hear from you last year and I hope we will be able to keep in touch for the remaining years of our lives. I have little news …. Our rains appear to have failed this year and the country looks dreadful. I have been busy recently with the MGM film company who are producing King Solomon's Mines here. Some of the shots were taken on my farm and I procured the Africans, wagons, oxen etc. for the Safari scenes. If you do see it when released, you will know what sort of country this is. The opening scene is taken in Machakos where I have my farm. The people were very nice and I enjoyed doing the job. Sorry this is such an uninteresting letter. Again my best regards to you all. …..
10 Apr 1955 - Well, Barney, I have seen the best of Africa. When I went to Uganda in 1905 there was no railway, no cars, no road and no other means of transport than one's own feet with safari loads carried by porters and believe me no one was in less danger from theft or interferences than in any other place in the world. I met Roosevelt and his son Kermit on the Nile when he was over here. He talked about the Treaty of Portsmouth which he had initiated between Japan and Russia. It was history described by the Master. Barney I don't know why I have rambled on like this. It is quiet and I feel as if I am talking to you. Thank you again for the wonderful letter ……..
