Ben Bingham (grandson) He started WWI as a midshipman but had been promoted to sub-lieutenant by the end of the war and to lieutenant by the time he retired in 1923 to head of to the Chinese Customs in Shanghai. Between the wars he was promoted to lieut-commander in the naval reserves and then to Commander when he rejoined during WW2.
