Permanent Way - In September 1903 ......... was sent to South Africa to make known the merits of EA and to attract settlers. Mr Marsden's mission was so successful that it greatly surprised the Government. The aftermath of the Boer War induced many South Africans to seek fresh pastures, and hundreds of them responded to Mr Marsden's call.

Appointed with the approval of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to visit South Africa in order to report on the prospects of trade between East and South Africa as well as to make known the suitability of the East African Highlands for white Immigration and to encourage the colonisation by desirable settlers.

Drumkey - Apr. 20 1908 - At the Mombasa Club, a number of the members of the mercantile community entertained Mr A. Marsden on the occasion of his departure for Calcutta and Mr W.F. Major, the newly appointed Chief of Customs. The Indian community presented Mr Marsden with a silver casket.
Izuakor - In his Annual Report, A. Marsden, the Chief of Customs, alleged that "whilst a NGOMA is going on the natives dance al night and sleep all day."
