KFA - A Director of the BEA Farmers' Association formed in 1919. ....... Among the group which settled on the other side of Nakuru, between the Rongai and the Molo rivers, and at about the same time, the outstanding figure was Sammy McCall. .............. Sammy McCall was one of the outstanding characters of these pioneer days. A Scots shepherd, he arrived at the end of 1903 with a shipload of sheep, dismounting from the train at Njoro in a thick tweed suit and a bowler hat. His master, Lord Delamere, sent him almost immediately to New Zealand to buy Merinos.

A year or two later, he took the sheep and most of the cattle down to Delamere's land at Elmenteita and started the Soysambu ranch. On his arrival there a fierce cock ostrich (and they could be very savage) charged and altogether routed this dignified and sturdy Highlander. Unamused, he grimly delivered to his employer the ultimatum: "Either that bir-r-r-d goes the noo, my lord, or ye'll be needing a new manager." The bird went. .....…..

Delamere was not an easy master, and it is said that Sammy McCall carried around in the pocket of the tweed waistcoat he seldom discarded a notice of resignation which he presented, every few months, to his employer. Mr McCall was a blunt-spoken man. When his efforts to convince a colleague - another obstinate Scot - of the need to accept a public position appeared to be failing, he paused, fixed him with a stern glare and inquired deliberately : "Has it ever occurred to you that there may be others who are even more of a bloody fool than ye are ye'sel'?" Yet his homespun charm robbed his forthright sayings of all offence, for everyone knew that his honesty of speech, thought and deed was absolute. ............

Although he had resigned from the chair of the KFA in 1928, Sammy McCall had remained an active director until the day of his death. His forthright Scots bluntness, his simplicity, his absolute integrity and his pawky humour had grown into a tradition; and the resolution passed by the board that "to him more than to any other single individual the success of the Association is due" was no mere platitude.

Ex Mrs Thurstan, EAWL Devon - C.J. Mackay and McCall went to Mombasa to meet Mackay's fiancée. McCall fell for her sister who came out as chaperone and married her.

Playne - Pastoralists' Association (Nakuru) - The idea of this association was first mooted by Messrs S. McCall and R. Chamberlain, and at a meeting a few days later the association was formed after a joint conference between them and Mr A.S. Flemmer. At a general meeting held at Nakuru on May 22, 1906, a constitution was agreed to, and Mr Flemmer was elected President and Mr Banks Secreatry and Treasurer.  

At the annual meeting in 1907 Mr Chamberlain was elected President; Messrs S. McCall and Flemmer Vice-Presidents, while Mr Banks was re-elected as Secretary and Treasurer. At the annual meeting in 1908 Dr. Atkinson was elected President, Messrs S. McCall and F. Watkins Vice-Presidents, and Mr P.G. Throne Secretary and Treasurer, vice Mr Banks, resigned. Playne - Lord Delamere - Soysambu Estate, on Lake Elmenteita - This estate is of 45000 acres, and is some 12 miles from Nakuru Station. Lord Delamere has lately acquired Colonel Harrison's land and residence, a fine stone house overlooking Lake Elmenteita. The farm is very beautiful, being surrounded by mountains and having the Lake on one side ......... a river runs through the estate, and so does the railway. There are 35 miles of fencing. The manager is Mr S. McCall, who has had a lifetime of experience with sheep in Scotland. He went to New Zealand to buy the first importation of sheep for Lord Delamere
