General Information:

SE - S. Medicks - Aug 1908
Playne - The Machine Metal Works - One of the oldest firms in BEA is the Machine Metal Works, Nairobi, the proprietor of which, Mr S. Medicks, came out in 1904 from England. Ridging, curved corrugated iron, tanks, baths, guttering, and pipes of all descriptions are turned out with promptness and despatch. ......... Mr Medicks has engaged a man from Europe to enable him to cope with his increasing trade. Fancy sheet metal work, as done in England, is within the reach of all in EA and at prices which compare favourably with home prices, as Mr Medicks imports his material direct. He is also a direct importer of corrugated iron. Mr Medicks commenced business in a small place in Govt. Rd. over 5 years ago, and has consistently forged ahead ......……
Year Book - 1953 - Mr Samuel Medicks, the builder and owner of the Theatre Royal, gave the place, rent free, for a committee to use as a war welfare theatre. …….. Then came a blankness in these activities when Mr Samuel Medicks died and the Theatre Royal was taken over to become a cinema.

Glimpses - 1903 - The larger group of Jewish pioneers came a more roundabout way, from South Africa. This was a group of 7 who disembarked at Mombasa in July 1903. They were young men from Central European farming backgrounds who, having got wind of the 'Uganda Plan', came to take up farming in Kenya. A couple did not like what they saw, turned around and left. But 5 stalwarts stayed: Abraham Block (aged 20), I. Hotz, M.W. London, Simon Medicks and W. Sulsky.
Glimpses - It was at this juncture, at the end of the war, that Simon (often known as Sam) Medicks put up, on Sixth Avenue his famous Theatre Royal building, which "arose in solitary splendour amidst the surrounding waste land of those early days". It was listed in The "Red Book" 1919 as one of only 2 theatres in Nairobi, complete with "tea room", tel 200. Medicks had got hold of the plans for the Theatre Royal in London, and so Nairobi's Theatre Royal was an exact replica thereof. The building, as well as housing the theatre itself, provided premises for various shops (mostly Jewish ones), while its upper apartments were home to the Medicks, the Szlapaks and their 2 sons, and then various Jewish families over the years.
Glimpses - In the early 1920s Abraham Block's friend Simon Medicks brought out family members, his cousin the tinsmith Abraham (Alf) Medicks and his wife, Bela (who was also a cousin), and their 2 sons, Stanley and Mervyn, and another relative, a tailor named Pincus Mardigs. Simon Medicks had taken the EA Tank and Metal Works (Machine Metal Works) that had been established by Michael Harrtz in 1907; now that Simon was busy with his grand Theatre Royal he turned the old Metal Works over to Abraham. And Pincus Mardigs made a name for himself as a very good gent's tailor.
