Web - Born in Egypt where his father was Director of Railways and Telegraphs in the Khedivial government. When Ernest was in his 20s he went to India where he is described as "of the Moran Tea Estate, Assam". In 1911-12 he participated in the Abor Expedition in the Himalayas with the Assam Light Horse. ………. Later Ernest served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army 17th Cavalry, where he rose to the rank of Captain. During WW1 he was seconded to the Royal Army Flying Corps where he earned his British pilot's licence..It sems he was part of the Arabian Detachment or 'C' Flight of 14 Squadron, which provided air support during Lawrence's attacks on the Turkish Hejaz Railway. Ernest was forced down in Sinai, and was imprisoned by the Turks at Kedos.
On June 3 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross. …………….
Ernest came to Canada in 1918 and bought land near Wanets, British Columbia on the Pend Orielle River, where he established the Nine Mile Ranch. …………. Ernest and Cecile had a difficult marriage, which broke up during the period 1923-24. After the divorce, Ernest married Dorothy Castle, who had worked at the Nine Mile Ranch as a hired hand. Diana said that Dorothy and Ernest settled in Kenya in 1924, but this conflicts with their 1926 marriage date in Victoria, BC. Dorothy had family in BC, and Ernest had cousins on Vancouver Island, so perhaps they returned for the wedding.
At any rate, Ernest was a manager of the Kericho Tea Plantation for James Findlay's African Highlands Produce Co. During WW2 Ernest was called up to serve in the reserves with the KAR as officer in charge of Nyanza Province. In about 1953 he retired to England ………. But he wasn't happy in England and didn't like the English climate. He had lived most of his life in Africa, so he and Dorothy returned to Kenya and bought the 1700 acre Kaimosi Coffee Plantation.
The cause of death is not clear; a family letter spoke of complications from a ruptured appendix but Diana said he had chest or lung problems. Diana [daughter] speaks of her father in glowing terms and says he was stern, but very loving and had a heart of gold.
