Old Africa no 107 June-July 2023 Mwishowe section Joe Mulholland was born in 1892 in Belfast in Northern Ireland,  where   he grew up.  He was an apprentice horse trainer and jockey at a horse stable for seven years, before joining the army and fighting in World War I. Joe immigrated to Kenya in 1920 when he was 28 years old. At first he worked for the Nairobi Town Council.  But horses  were  his true love and he almost immediately  got involved with racing.According to past records, Mulholland's first
race ride was in the East African Standard Gold Cup on 14 October  1920 on Lady McMillan's Rillingdale. The race was won by Mr Clutterbuck riding his own horse Ask Papa. Captain Elkington's   Nightie was second and Mulholland was third out of eight runners. Mulholland soon became one of Kenya's first top race riders, running a racing stable as a trainer and jockey.  He was a successful trainer and top jockey for many years, racing until he was 55 years old.

In 1922 Joe won the Kenya Derby on Cameo owned by Miss Greswolde-Williams. In the 1927-1928 racing season on Mrs GM Lawrence's Prince Charming. Mulholland started off the second day of the race meeting by winning a Fourth Division Plate, again on Little Minister, but this race was over seven furlongs. He followed with a win in the Progeny Handicap on Stepson, belonging to Mr A Woolman. The next race was a Second Division Plate, which Mulholland won on Brigadier-General AC Lewin's Scottfree. He went on to ride Joyous Gard, belonging to MF Hill, to victory in the October Nursery Handicap before winning the Autumn Handicap on Cassonade, belonging to Spiers  and Hobson.  Mulholland rode in 12 of the 16 races in the race meet getting eight wins, a second place and a third place. He finished out of the running twice. This is probably
still the Kenyan record for a two-day 16-race meeting.

Another of his many great achievements was winning the Kenya Gold Cup in 1942 on Towerkite aged 50! Joseph Mulholland died in Nairobi on the 17 January 1965 aged 73. His daughter Maureen and grandson Brian were still living in Kenya at the time.
