Sir Michael McWilliam (son): my father went out to Kenya from Cirencester in 1926 to join Brooke Bond and took part in the early planting of their estates in Kericho. However he was meant to be on the marketing side of the business and during the 1930s he was a principal architect and then manager of a scheme to share local market sales between the various tea growing firms. At the outbreak of war he was appointed Tea Controller for East Africa to manage the bulk buying contracts with the Ministry of Food and he became a director of the local Brooke Bond companies. In 2021 I published a history of the Kenya tea industry, Simba Chai, and the Bodleian has taken my archive into its collections. The early chapters have quite a bit on some of the individuals who were first involved in developing tea growing.
