Elmer Bartholomew arrived in Kangundo in 1899 as a single man. He arrived with C.F. Johnstone to relieve Bangert, the sole remaining AIM missionary after various deaths and departures.

His wife was also a missionary and much loved in the district.
Between Two Mountains Two sisters, Clara and Jean Fowler, arrived at Kangundo's mission station on 10 Jan 1903, Jean Fowler died on 4 Feb 1903, having lasted less than a month. Clara became a v. attractive prospect for delivering Bartholomew from a state of bachelorhood.
Bartholomew left East Africa within a year or so of his wife's death.
