Nicholls - An activity less enervating than playing cricket in Mombasa's heat was sailing round the island, in the cool sea breezes. Captain Henry Pidcock, the Port Officer and deputy governor of the jail, was an excellent companion on such expeditions, familiar as he was with the peculiarities of wind and current.
