General Information:

Curtis - p. 25 - ....... We ought to get to Taveta tomorrow. Mr Maxsted, the Commissioner there, has written to us several times, giving us a very warm welcome.  Taveta, July 6th 1899 - This place is quite fascinating and Captain Maxsted the best of hosts. He is building himself such a jolly little house, which is far enough advanced to house us. The only other European in the place is the Missionary, Mr McGregor, and he is very ill with inflammation of the lungs.
Capt. Maxsted combines the offices of Judge, Doctor, Commander of the Forces, Organist in Church, Postmaster and everything else in the village. He is a regular little king here. Every morning after breakfast all his out-patients arrange themselves in front of his verandah. ......... It was strange after 6 days' march and hardly meeting a soul to come on this place with its three or four thousand inhabitants, with its church, printing office, store and even a parish magazine. ..…
