Playne - There are few men who know their Africa in general, and their BEA in particular, better than Mr C.E. Smith. He is an engineer by trade, but farmed in Natal for 5 years, after which he went to the Transvaal to work at his trade, and later on found his way to Rhodesia prospecting. Twelve years ago he came to BEA. He has travelled in the Congo territory and the Abyssinian border, and practically all over the Protectorate. His farm consists of 2,000 acres, of which a quarter is planted with wattle. ..............  Mr Smith has built a homestead himself 1 mile from the railway station and within 100 yards from the line. He has also put up some 6 miles of fencing, 6 wire, posts 10 feet apart. All this is the single-handed work of 4 years. A river with 3 miles frontage forms one boundary, and over 100 acres if necessary can be irrigated. .............. Mr Smith is under contract with the railway to supply 200,000 cubic feet of timber per annum for 35 years.
