After retirement soon recalled to Zanzibar to report and advise on an epidemic of cholera and, in 1914, did very effective work at Tanga and elsewhere. After the war appointed to organise and establish the Zanzibar War Memorial which took the form of a Museum and for some time he was also the editor of the Zanzibar Gazette.
