East Africa & Rhodesia - 24/5/56 - Mr Hugh John Harry Stedman, OBE, MInstCE who has died in England after an operation, went to British East Africa in 1905 as an assistant engineer in the Public Works Department, had charge of the building of the railway to Thika in 1911-12, and then became an executive engineer. He joined the 3rd Bn. KAR in 1914, and served in the East African campaign until 1917, when he was recalled to duty with the PWD. He was Director of Public Works in Zanzibar from 1925 to 1933, when he retired from the Colonial Service. Then he went to Trinidad as ADC to the Governor, Sir Claud Hollis, an old friend of Kenya and Zanzibar days.

Insit of Civil Engineers - HUGH JOHN HARRY STEDMAN, O.B.E., who was born on the 5th May, 1877,
He was educated at Shaws, Weymouth. From 1903 to 1905 he was on the staff of the Superintending Civil Engineer, Admiralty, Portland, and was concerned wit,h breakwaters, jetties, and installations for storage of fuel oil. Leaving England in 1905 he became Executive Engineer for the Public Works Department of the Kenya Government and was responsible for the Nairobi drainage construction, road realignment, the Thika railway alignment and earthwork, the Mombasa water supply, the pipelines and reservoirs. During the First World War he served with the King’s African Rilles in the East African campaign. died on the 12th May, 1956. In 1925 he became Director of Public Works for the Zanzibar Government and was in charge of construction of new roads and bridges, water-supply schemes, aerodromes, antimalarial works, land drainage, and reclamation and harbour works. In 1928 he was awarded the Brilliant Star, Zanzibar (Third claas). The following year he was
created an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. In 1933 he was Aide-de-camp to H. E. The Governor of Trinidad, Sir Claud Hollis, K.C.M.G., C.B.E. He was elected an Associate Member in 1916 and was transferred to the class of Members in 1926. He is survived by his wife.
