In her early days worked in the Sunderland Gas Co. office where whe met Sam Morrell. He preceded her to Kenya and when she followed later he met her in Mombasa "off the boat" and they were married in Mombasa Cathedral. She worked as receptionist at the Salisbury Hotel and, during the war, joined the Clelands in the Queen's Hotel before going to the Sudan to marry. Retired to Islip, Oxford in 1944. Husband Sam served throughout WW1 (Seaforth Highlanders) mainly in the trenches in Flanders. A mild-mannered man, he had the distinction of attaining the rank of Company Sergeant Major. He joined Billy Joiner in Elliot's bakery in the early 1920s and later became the Clerk to the Kenya Dept. of Agriculture. He died in 1939. Jessie's second husband Edgar served in WW1 in the HAC in Egypt and Palestine. He retired as Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Khartoum.
