Gazette 12/4/1922 - Brands Registered during quarter ending 31/3/1922 - Capt. A. Brodhurst Hill - Olemusogai, PO Turbo Valley - GO3
Brodhurst-Hill - "In our early days on the farm Charles was often ill; he had come out to the country with dysentery, and too much hard work at the beginning had done him no good, so I [Evelyn B-H] took what I could off his hands, especially the coffee-planting, and used to spend hours in the shamba with a shooting stick and an enormous white umbrella. One of our neighbours, who saw the umbrella gyrating about day after day, was always teasing me about my hard work, and declared that I kept the boys in order by terrifying them out of their wits.
Once, in the hearing of several people, he mentioned the finding of a human skull in the stream below our coffee shamba and declared it must have belonged to some unlucky boy that Mrs Bache had got annoyed with and had "done in".
"Not at all!" I said. "Does not every man know that one day last year when you were grinding maize a native fell into the disintegrator and got ground up with the posho? It is his skull, and it was brought down by the last flood." Not a word of truth in the allegation of course but it turned the tables on my tormentor, most successfully."
