Chandler - In 1899 near Nairobi, Dr Waters went out to shoot some elephant that were raiding native farms. Spotting a large bull, he tried a heart shot at close range with a .577 double. Two huge bullets had no discernible effect on the tusker, and Waters ran for his life. The elephant was just about to grab him with its trunk when Waters disappeared! He had fallen into a Kikuyu game pit. Fortunately for him, the pit wasn't staked at the bottom. The confused elephant stomped around a bit and wandered off. Waters, a bit bruised but otherwise OK, clambered out and, in true frontier style, finished the hunt.
