Iliffe - Forster came to Freretown on 7 July 1875 and opened a free dispensary in Mombasa Town. A frail man of 'morbidly nervous temperament', he anxiously sought assistants. Two young Bombay Africans 'failed thro' bad morals', leaving him at the end of 1875 with only James Assura, who must at this time have been about 15 or 16 and had apparently arrived from India somewhat earlier through a connection with freedmen working for the previous missionaries near Mombasa. By the time Forster returned to England in April 1876, Assura had become the mainstay of the medical work .
