Campling - Receptionists at the Outspan came and went. ….. [1930s] … Isolde Ann Duthy, a delicate blue-eyed girl whose intrepid sister Barbara [Simpson] took up flying after the war. Barbara later came to fame when in the early 50s she made a disastrous attempt to cross the Sahara in a small Austin car. [The trip resulted in two dead and is the subject of a book 'The Trek'.
Wolseley-Lewis - 1930s - There were depressing tragedies. Mrs Duthie [sic] lost her husband but carried on farming to educate her two daughters which she did. One daughter, Barbara, had an accident on her bicycle in England and ran into a brick wall and disfigured herself for life. Then mother coming back from England and died in an air-crash. There was no money left. [Barbara had plastic surgery in England].
