Book Reference: Dow, Red Book 1912

General Information:

Dow - Rift Valley Academy - Miss Slater, the housemother from 1927-30 ….. According to the students, the tiny Miss Slater fit her role perfectly. Her obvious compassion for these children who were separated from their parents resonated with the boarders at RVA. Cookies and games on Saturday night and other budding traditions gave the building once described as, "a gaunt, gloomy edifice …." a sense of warmth and security. Despite being the lone adult in charge of up to 30 students (many taller and stronger than she) Miss Slater was able to keep "perfect order". As one person remembered "she trusted you and believed in you. This brought out the best in a person".
