General Information:

Glimpses - Walter [Susskind] and six others were the first batch of refugees to be sent to Kenya. The Nairobi Jewish congregation had been informed of their coming and had sent a representative to Mombasa to accompany them to Nairobi. Together with his shipboard companions Walter spent a day at the home of a Jew in Mombasa, where he met the daughter of the house who was later to become his wife. That same day the refugees boarded the train for Nairobi from where they were directed to farms (Joseph, 1998) ………………..
Walter [Susskind] was sent to Rongai to manage the farm of a brother of the president  [of the NHC]. Walter had a sense of adventure coming to Africa all alone into the unknown - a courageous act. …………… This was 1933 and Walter was one of the first Jews to visit Nakuru. He did this once a week, travelling on the dirt road from Rongai by bicycle. His first boss was not a pleasant man and after two years when Walter asked for a higher salary it was refused. So Walter left to manage the farm next door belonging to an Englishman where he stayed for 3 years. This boss was to become a real friend of the family. (Joseph, 1998)
