Web - In 1934 I was cook/housekeeper to Mr & Mrs Stevenson who lived in Wimbledon along with their son and daughter. Their eldest daughter Edith Margaret was married to Ernest Meredyth Hyde-Clarke, he was a District Commissioner who worked in Kenya. The first time I met Mr & Mrs Hyde-Clarke was when they came home on furlough in 1933. At that time they had a young daughter, Janet who had accompanied them on the long journey to England. Mr Hyde-Clarke came to stay for 6 months but Mrs Hyde-Clarke was intending to stay for a year. She was due to return to Kenya in October 1934 and she asked me if I would like to go with her, to help care for Janet and to help with the housekeeping. She gave me a week to think it over, but I did not need all that time. I had always wanted to travel and to me it seemed like a dream come true.
