General Information:

Letter from Mrs Mary Ulyate - 'Kenya's EAR&H was built by two English blokes by the name of Gailey and Roberts and if I remember correctly most of the settlers there were given land after WW1 at 50 cents per acre, to open up that bit of Africa. That's why the Barberton's (another well known family who lived in Kitale) owned such a lot of land when they emigrated from S. Africa (The Voortrekkers) or pioneers and they mostly settled on the Plateau (Eldoret or Uasing Gishu, Kitale District was Trans Nzoia and very few of them settled there. Grandpa Ulyate was first of all at Gilgil where he was sold a pup and lost all his cash. I'll tell you something funny now. In 1985 when Dad and I took you and Moira to go to school in Scotland, your Auntie Cis told me later that she expected Dad to be black!' Source: Mrs A. Cambra and Mrs E.A.R. Esterhuysen
