Bunting dated 22nd January 1909 from Nairobi mentions "West is alright but not a patch on you, too much self opinionated, and even argues the point with the Treasury people which, as you know, is the wrong way to get things forward. Your place has not yet been filled, they would not give it to West. …. PS - West learned to ride a Mule, but he is not a success as an equestrian, he generally has to go where the mule goes, not long he had to walk home 10 miles, the mule must have been tired he came home by itself.""
