Barnes - William Barnes was married to Lizzie Udall and in partnership with Robert Udall, the younger brother of Charles. They ran the "Ye Old Gables" stores and Hotel in Ruiru. The Hotel later changed its name to the Red Lion Hotel after a change of ownership and eventually closed in 1964. For many years the Hotel provided the food for the Festive Board. Stories are told that at calling off a runner would be despatched to the Hotel to confirm the number of suppers required for the Festive Board. William died in 1926 and in 1936 his widow donated his Founder's Jewel to the Museum at the District Grand Lodge of East Africa.

Kiambu Scrapbook - Thika Tramway -'…. Another unpunctual passenger, this time for the return journey [to Ruiru], was Mrs Lizzie Barnes who, with her brother Bob Udall, ran the Ruiru General Stores and later, the Red Lion. The train would wait at Nairobi station until Lizzie had finished her shopping and was ready to return to Ruiru.
