Kenya Diary - 1902 - 'I have made friends with a local lawyer in Nairobi called B.G. Alan [sic]. He has only just come out and his practice is not yet built up ....... (I got to know Alan well later on. He started life in Nairobi with £300 and died about 1920 worth £150,000). He started in partnership with another solicitor called Tonks, but they soon separated. I renewed my friendship with Alan in 1914. He never married and died soon after WW1.
