Dudley Cowie was also killed in the same accident.. The Maia Carberry Nursing Home in Nairobi was built in memory of her, the building being designed in the shape of an aeroplane. Gravestone in Nairobi, Forest Rd. says - 'Per Ardua Ad Astra'
Joelson - 1928 - Kenya's first airwoman, and  the first aviator to wing a way from Mombasa to Nairobi.
Mombasa - came to Mombasa to make the first flight from Mombasa to Nairobi. The only flat space to be found in the town, devoid of trees, was on the playing fields of Mombasa Sports Club. Fences were taken down and a makeshift runway cleared which ended at the newly built Palace (now Castle) Hotel. She started the plane, gave it all the speed she dared, left the ground, rose and to everyone's horror approached the roof of the hotel. This she just missed by a hair's breadth and then she turned inland and arrived at Nairobi before dusk. For this exploit, Maia was regarded as a heroine.
Aero - Maia Carberry learned to fly at Heston and was the first Kenya-born lady to own and fly her own aircraft "Miss Propaganda". Born Maia Anderson, she was the wife of Lord Carbery who by deed poll renounced his title in favour of being known as plain John Evans Carberry. "Miss Propaganda" was sea-freighted to Mombasa and re-assembled there.
Aero - See That Propeller at the Aero Club and Think of ….. - by Edward Rodwell - ………. Maia Carberry used the Sports Club [Mombasa] facility in the late 20s. She had imported a small aircraft which was uncrated and put together in a garage on Kilindini Road almost opposite the old Mombasa Times building. The machine was then trundled down the road to the Sports Club. There was no opportunity to test the machine and it was a short take-off because the Palace Hotel, two stories high then stood at the end of the run. Maia gave the aircraft the gun; took off and climbed over the hotel on the way to Nairobi.
Nairobi Forest Road Cemetery - Maiia Alfred [sic] Carberry, British, age 24, died 12/3/28
John Carberry married the 19-year-old Kenya-born Maia Ivy Anderson in 1922 …….. Maia (or 'Bubbles' as she was affectionately known within her family) learned to fly in England and after obtaining her licence, she purchased a DH Moth which she named 'Miss Propaganda'. This was crated and shipped to Mombasa where it arrived in November 1927 and was assembled there, and then with a passenger beside her she flew it to Nairobi, making the first flight ever between Mombasa and Nairobi ……  Maia Carberry was killed in a tragic accident in 'Miss Propaganda' in March 1928, and she and her passenger, Dudley Cowie, became Kenya's first  flying fatalities.. The accident took place at Nairobi's Dagoretti airfield while she was taking the 24-year-old Dudley for a joyride, and the suggestion was made afterwards that Dudley, who was keen to learn to fly had taken over the controls and had then frozen on to them in panic. They were both taken to Dr. Rabagliati's Eskotene Nursing Home but were found to be dead on arrival. ….. Maia left a daughter, the 3-year-old Juanita.
