June 14th - Arrived Marsabit met Marquis Hornyold {the company's other man in the area} about one hour from camp; he had been getting meat. I was agreeably surprised with the beauty of Marsabit Camp. It stands on a lake, which is surrounded by cliffs and trees and looks very much a Scottish loch. A veritable oasis in the desert. Hornyold, who is about the same age as Alec, is a fairly decent fellow, and of course no ceremony was made of our meeting. During his 2 months up here he had built 1 mud house for self and rush houses for porters. We also have a flagstaff and a real live Union Jack which is hoisted every morning at sunrise. Hornyold contemplated a trip to Borana territory which I believe belongs to Abyssinia, but really no-one seems to know to whom it belongs as Menelik claims a good deal south of his own country. However, we got his safari ready and started him off on June 17th. ...... the days passed, with cold misty mornings, and still Hornyold did not reappear, though long overdue. ........ [more] ........ at last, on the 21 August, Hornyold returns, followed a few days later by the cattle he has bought. ....... August 28th - Hornyold left for Nairobi today leaving me all mules, horses and cattle to take down to Samburu country and trade off for goats and sheep. ...…
