Habari 21 - Superintendent of Police in charge of Nairobi in 1922 at the time of the Harry Thuku incident. ...... 'Mr Cary talked to the crowd, urging them to disperse as they were committing an offence by remaining where they were. ............ In conversation with Mr Cary after the affair, he informed me that he gave no order to fire. On the road had appeared a Kikuyu who commenced haranguing the crowd and he (Cary) decided to arrest him to prevent his working the crowd up to violence. In attempting this, the Kikuyu got the better of him and threw him to the ground. One of the Constables, probably thinking Mr Cary would be killed or injured, fired at his assailant. On this shot being fired, the other guards, presumably thinking an order had been given to open fire, also started shooting. Firing was stopped as soon as it was possible. In any case the firing stopped the riot and caused the crowd to disperse in very quick time. ............. Mr Cary, a very religious man, was very upset over the affair as he considered himself indirectly responsible for people losing their lives.' (Source: Albert Finch - Superintendent Airfields Guards)
