Hobley - I can picture him leading the charge of his regiment a few years later at Pieter's Hill, where his reckless daring against the deadly aim of Boer marksmen resulted in his much regretted death.    
Moyse - 1895 - Capt. Cunningham withdrew troops from Bunyoro for a punitive expedition against the Nandi. At Mumia's Cunningham was joined by Capt. C.H. Sitwell (Manchester Regt.) who had been ordered to assist C.W. Hobley, the administrative officer. Lieut. Vandeleur was also involved. ..... In December 1895 Cunningham and Vandeleur left for the coast on the way to England.

Web - Warriors in Heart of Darkness by Dennis Bishop - 1895 - After considering several options Major G.G. Cunningham decided to invade Nandi with a field force of 400 askari of the I, IV, V, IX URR, with a Maxim, 600 porters and 800 followers from Kampala. The huge caravan attracted a lot of attention as it marched to Mumias. The local natives were awed by the spectacle that was arrayed against the Nandi. At Mumias on October 29, Cunningham was joined by Dr. Mackinnon. The total column consisted of 5 Europeans, 7 native officers, 367 askari, 23 Baganda "drilled and disciplined" auxiliaries, and a few armed Swahili porters in the Maxim detachment. After Captain C.H. Sitwell's column arrived, the number of askari increased to 428. This was more than one thrid of the total regular troops available in the Protectorate. ….. [more]

DSO - He joined the 85th Foot as Second Lieut. from the Militia 14 Sept 1878, and served in the Afghan War, 1879-80 ……. in 1882 served with the Egyptian Expedition being present at the defence of Alexandria, occupation of Kafr Dowar and surrender of Damietta. ……. From 11 May 1895 to 10 Oct 1899, he was employed in the Uganda Protectorate. He commanded the expeditions against the Kitosh, Kabras and Kikelwa tribes 1895. For the Nandi Expedition, 1895-6 he was mentioned in Despatches. In Uganda in 1897-8; in Feb and March 1898 he commanded the operations against the Mwanga, and fought an action near Katonga River, and other engagements. He was mentioned in Despatches; was given the Brevet of Lieut.-Col. 4 Oct 1899 (he had been promoted to Major 13 Oct 1898), and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 24 Jan 1899) - In recognition of services during the recent operations in Uganda. The Insignia were sent to the Foreign Office, and sent by the Foreign Office to HM Commissioner in Uganda. Lieut.-Col. C.G.H. Sitwell's Insignia etc. were returned by Sir R. Buller, Lieut.-Col. C.G.H. Sitwell having been killed at Tugela. The DSO, Warrant and Statutes were sent to Miss Blanche Sitwell for Colonel Sitwell's daughter, Miss C.D.C. Sitwell. Hobley - 1892/3 expedition against the Ketosh tribe - ..... Sitwell was the life and soul of the fight; he was a fair-haired, blue-eyed man of the true Nordic type, and, as the resistance stiffened, he seemed to enjoy himself the more.
