Eldoret - Schofield appeared in his office one day in one gum boot with the other bootless leg covered in mud to the calf. When this deficiency was brought to the attention of his superior officer by K.L. Hunter, it was found that the other boot was stuck in the mud a few yards from the office door.  
Summary of Hunter Memoirs received from Jack Dunkley - Came to EA with the South African Forces during WW1, served under General Northey. On demobilisation, General Northey, by then Governor of Kenya, offered Hunter a job in the Administration. Arrived Mombasa 1919, posted to Eldoret, reached by train to Londiani then by ox-cart "64" miles to his station. Supervised first elections for Legco in 1919. Trans Nzoia had 24 registered voters - 17 in favour of Bert Kirk, whose son Rex became Mayor of Eldoret. 1919/20 DO at West Suk - Kacheleba. 1921 Married in S. Africa. Next posting Eldoret again. then to Naivasha - Happy Valley - Lord Erroll and Lady Idina. Then to Nairobi - domestic servants problems. Then DC Nandi - stock thefts. Then South Kavirondo - Kisii - The elephant trench, Rusinga Island, Tom Mboya NOT a Luo. 1939 - Turkana - Kapenguria - Merille raid and KAR action. Then DC Central Kavirondo - Kisumu. Then DC North Kavirondo - Kakamega - meeting Chief Mumia. Then PC Nyanza Province - Kisumu - Army recruiting and food production. VIP visitors - Gen. Curtis - p. 101 - 'Nandi' from the memoirs of Kenneth Hunter - born in British Guiana in 1897, was managing his mother's farm in the Transvaal when war broke out in 1914. He enlisted at once, although under age, and took part in campaigns in SW Africa, Mozambique, N. Rhodesia, Tanganyika and Kenya. He served under General Northey, who, when he became Governor of Kenya after the war, invited Kenneth to join the Kenya Administration as an ADC. After a distinguished career in which he reached the rank of PC, he retired in 1950 and lived at Karen. On Independence in 1963 he at once applied for Kenya citizenship and was the first resident to become a citizen by the registration procedure.

Richardson 1925 - Naivasha - "we called upon Mr & Mrs K.L. Hunter, ADC, who received us most hospitably and offered us lunch though the hour was long past. The DC's house is very nicely situated and commands lovely views over the lake. Mr Hunter is quite a young man (about 27) and has to act as magistrate, doctor, military officer and anything else that comes his way. "
