Gazette 6 Dec 1938 Rift Valley Voters List at Lolchorai, Nakuru
KFA - Came to Kenya early in 1917 to the KAR on secondment from the Cameronians, in which he had served since the outbreak of war, bieng twice wounded, and having won the MC. He took up a soldier settler farm at Njoro and, like many others, lost everything in flax. Fortunately an accountant's training won him a job with the railway until he was able to return to farming, this time as a manager. After his marriage in 1929 he and his wife started (in addition to a farm) the Lolchorai Stud at Njoro, and so successful were they that for 17 years they headed the list of winning racehorse breeders.
Len Spiers' abilities in business earned him a place on several boards, and he was also active in public work of various kinds. It is, of course, customary to dwell upon the virtues and not upon the shortcomings of those who are mourned, but to say that Len Spiers made a first-rate Chairman, worked like a beaver, was liked and trusted by everyone and was, in fact, generally conceded to be the ideal man for the job is not, in this case, a set of valedictory platitudes. It is also true to say that he worked himself to death. Although, when he took on the chairmanship of the KFA, he gave up some of his other interests, he still had too much to do; the strain told, and in July 1956, he died peacefully on his 60th birthday, leaving behind a deep sense of bereavement not only among his family and personal friends but throughout the Colony.

Arriving in Africa in 1917, he settled in Njoro immediately after the armistice. In addition to farming he was interested in horse breeding, his Lolchorai stud being well known in the Colony.
