General Information:

In 1909 he joined the British India Line. Being in Mombasa in August 1914 he was promptly called to the Colours and when the German cruiser 'Koenigsberg' engaged 'H.M.S. Pegasus' in Zanzibar roadstead, he was patrolling the entrance in a tug which was shelled at short range, forcing the crew to swim ashore. Ordered to beach the 'Pegasus', he was aboard trying to slip her cable when she overturned and sank, so for the second time that day he had to swim home. In 1914 he received the DSO for gallantry during an action in Dar-es-Salaam Harbour.
