Pioneers - Nyeri - …. There were Indian dukas in the village by 1904, and a year or two later Sandy Herd opened his general store, and then started the White Rhino Hotel.
Campling - Sandy Herd ran a general trading store and also owned the White Rhino, a hotel that had been going since World War 1, a much-frequented place providing healthy competition to the Outspan. Sandy was a well-known and popular character in the area and Keith [Campling] got on well with him, then after the war his youngest son Alan became a pilot and aircraft engineer and worked with Keith in his aviation business in Nairobi.
