General Information:

KFA - Originally went to the Arusha district but grew dissatisfied with a rule whose efficiency and stringency were uncongenial, and trekked northwards to try his luck in the British Protectorate. In 1903 he walked from Arusha to Nairobi in 5 days and back in 4. A penniless individual, he earned a meagre livelihood by making kongoni hide shoes for 2/- a pair. Lacking the price of a railway ticket, he walked to the Plateau where he settled, and was still alive at 96 years old - and, until the age of 90, making his own shoes.
Web - contacted by Jan Janse van Rensburg when he went to Kenya in 1906 on an exploratory trip prior to the 1908 trek.
Habari 2009 - At the end of 1906, the Arnoldis, John de Waal and the Cloetes, joined by the Viljoens and Fred Loxton from Bethel, trekked with all their possessions to Nakuru. From there, in the beginning of 1907, Frans Arnoldi and John de Waal, accompanied by Sonny Cloete's father, Abraham Joubert and Fred Loxton travelled by ox wagon up the western wall of the Rift Valley to the Plateau (a hazardous journey lasting 2 months) where they stayed with the Van Breda brothers. Afterwards they settled on the Plateau.
