General Information:

Garden - '........ Mr & Mrs Waterman ..... Their daughter at Ruiru has a small squab farm, inspired by the story of the one at Coggers told in "The Squabbling Garden" and stocked from one of its pupils. I went out and saw their farm, filled with curiosity to see what they had made of the venture; the young husband is of old original pioneer stock, his parents trekked from South Africa after the Boer War up to Kenya; Nairobi was still a swamp. They were British and Britain had won the war; but she was so busy looking after the conquered Dutch and reinstating them on their burned-out farms far more comfortably than they had ever been before, that the (also) burned-out and devastated British farmers were often very skimpily, if not scurvily, treated. A strange fact; and characteristic. We drove to Mrs Harries's squab farm in early morning and I listen enthralled while he told me stories of his youth. It was a real safari, camping out on the way, to get from Ruiru to Nairobi at first; and then oxen gave way to horses. "I have done the journey in every possible way," he said. "Except on wings, and I'll do that some day!" ....
