General Information:

Letter from John Carnegie - He had been Head Boy at Lancing school and was a very good farmer and expert game hunter. He made a wonderful orchard and plantation in a thorny and utterly impenetrable jungle with a gang of about 8 Africans from Kisii near Lake Victoria. He worked beside them, cleared the bush and trees, diverted the river so that it flowed along one side of the gorge (not a very large gorge) and terraced all the soil and put it all through a sort of sieve to remove all stones and roots and made a wonderful productive place in about 3 years. Quite a feat. That was just before WW2. He later sold it and went to live in, or near, Hawick, Roxburgh. (I think in the 50s). His poor wife Jean died suddenly near the end of the war. ....... Jean came, I heard, second in a horse race, carrying her weight cloth over her arm. It had come out from under the saddle and would have been lost, thus disqualifying her, but she extracted it, folded it and somehow balanced on the saddle, which was very loose, as she hurtled along and obtained the credit for being 'placed' instead of disqualified.
