Tom Lawrence: He joined the Kenya Regiment in the Special Reserve on 22nd Aug 1938, and remained there until the outbreak of war, when he was then transferred to 5th KAR on 30th Aug 1939.He was with 5th KAR under the command of Maj. Roger Hurt (5th KAR) that reached the Awash River on the 2nd April 1941. With the detachment were a platoon from ‘C’ Coy. 3 KAR (Medium Machine Guns), an Anti-Tank battery section, a section from the 22nd Mountain battery, Indian Army, a section of Royal Engineers (54th Field Coy.) and a Squadron from the East African Armoured car Regt. The road bridge had been recently blown by the retreating Italians, however 5th KAR managed to cross the river with some extreme bravery (three Military Medals and a Military Cross). Once across the river, they put in defensive positions, and on the 3rd the Italians approach one manned by 5th KAR. They sent out an offensive patrol, and in so doing took five prisoners, but in so doing, Jarrett was seriously wounded. He died three days later. He appears to be one of only two people who died in that action, one being Jarrett, and the other being an askari -Pte. Sitefano Okototub (Rhino Link, ‘Crossing the Awash by Harry Fecitt, Vol II, No 31, Oct 2019).
