Pembroke - EA Syndicate land - ' ...... A Captain Alan Gibson acquired some of this land, hoping to farm flax. A man of ambition, he set about building himself a mansion, but ran out of money when the programme was about three quarters finished. Forced to sell the incomplete shell - known as Gibson's Folly - and 110 acres of land about it was bought by one Harold Turner, who completed the building as a preparatory boarding school for boys of European descent: Pembroke House. [1927].  ....... From the outset many of the local farming community volunteered help - particularly where sporting activities were concerned. The most enthusiastic of them was probably Captain Gibson from whom Turner originally bought the land and building. He presented a Challenge Cup for sports and was always available to lend an organising hand. He also raised teams from among the local farming community (suitably handicapped of course) to play against the boys. Indeed, so interested did he become that in 1934 he joined as a full time member of staff as the school's Bursar, remaining until mid-1935 when he had to go to Britain for medical treatment. As an historical aside, Alan Gibson's brother Toby was one of the last of the lob (underarm) bowlers in first class cricket, and also a member of the local community who often came to Pembroke.
