General Information:

Golf - Responsible for Scott's Golf Course on "C" Route just beyond Upper Kiambu. It achieved tremendous popularity in the years 1934-39 when the war intervened and the owners sold it to Brooke-Bond.
He owned a large farm, mainly wattle, and decided to clear some of the land for a golf course, and as he could not "abide" browns, he used the local indigenous grass, commonly known as Kikuyu grass, for the greens.
Having made the course, he invited his many friends to come out at week-ends and enjoy what he called "real golf". Invitations were eagerly accepted as the attractions of the course with particular reference to the greens, and Major Scott's hospitality, made it a really delightful outing. He ran the whole thing with benevolent autocracy and any visitor who transcended his idea as to how the Game should be played, was treated accordingly.
Major Scott solved the difficulty of making reasonable putting surface with Kikuyu grass. This he achieved by scything all the greens. He was an expert with this difficult tool and took a delight in displaying his handling of it. After scything, he dusted the greens with light dressing of sifted compost. Unfortunately, this is too complicated for the ordinary greenkeeper, and explains why Kikuyu greens have never proved satisfactory on other courses. In 1936, Major Scott had to return to the UK and he was about to close down the course when the Browns bought the estate and Mr H.V.H. Gadsdon leased the course from them.
