Appreciation - It is a sad task to have to record the death of an old and valued friend. Chris Berryman passed away at the age of 72 on Oct. 27th after a protracted illness in Mombasa Hospital. After leaving King's School, Canterbury, he went to the Argentine, I believe as a pupil on a ranch. When the first World War broke out he returned to England and was commissioned in the RASC in which he was still serving when he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Medal for saving the life of a sergeant from drowning in Lake Timsha on the Suez Canal. After the War he came out to Kenya and farmed for some time at Makuyu, then in the early 30s he bought a small farm in North Kenya and grazed his considerable flock of Karakul sheep on rented land. In the second World War he again joined the RASC eventually being promoted to the rank of Major. He resumed farming after the war and in 1952 married Beth Llewelyn. He was a founder member and keen supporter of the Timau Club and was interested in all field sports especially cricket, on which he could speak with authority. Chris will be badly missed in the Nanyuki-Timau district. He was quiet and unassuming and after his marriage to Beth their home was open to all their friends. Anyone sick or in trouble staying with them found help in his quiet sympathy and understanding. Our sympathy goes out to his widow, who had hardly herself recovered from a severe illness when her husband fell ill, and to his two stepchildren, Tim and Philippa. - J.LL.
