Garden - 'It was at that settlers' paradise, Mara-Mura, one day that I found Mrs Coke (pronounced "Cook": Peter Coke, the clever and popular young London actor is their son) one day setting about some mystery, followed by the entire pack. She was always pretty busy in the mornings, and her guests forebore to interfere, but this time I was intrigued. What was it all about, all these dogs and the paraphernalia carried with pomp by the black boy? It proved to be the dogs' bath morning. I sat beside her and asked questions, learning dog-wisdom. .........' '.......Commander Coke, DSO, RN, commanded a coastal motor-boat flotilla during the War ..... Late in the War after a gruelling action in the Heligoland Bight in 1918, Commander Coke blew up his own boat, they were hush-hush boats and had to avoid capture at all costs; he was rescued by the Dutch and interned in Holland till Armistice; during his time of inaction he seems to have taken counsel with himself and decided to settle overseas instead of in England. His wife, young and gallant, was game to go, and I learned something of the early days as we sat under the shady trees at tea, or in the lofty living room where books line their walls, logfires burn .....…..'

DSO - London Gazette 29/11/18 - Honours for Operations off Terschelling on 11/8/1918 … in recognition of their gallantry during a reconnaissance of the West Frisian coast - "During the course of the operation the Coastal Motor Boats were attacked by hostile aircraft, and, although greatly outnumbered, succeeded in bringing down 2 enemy aircraft. Lieut.-Commander Coke, who was Senior Officer of the flotilla, showed great determination, gallantry and courage in continuing his reconnaissance in spite of the presence of the enemy. The Coastal Motor Boats led by Lieut.-Commander Coke fought a very gallant action against superior odds, and continued to do so until all their ammunition was expended or their Lewis guns rendered useless by jambing. [sic]"
