Profession: An explorer and orientalist, he entered the army in 1842 and spent 7 years in India. He worked on the Sind survey, very often distinguishing himself as a native and obtaining important information. In 1853 he made his famous journey to Mecca and Medina.

General Information:

In 1854 he was exploring in Somaliland. A friend and yet perhaps a rival of John Speke, both claimed to have discovered Lake Tanganyika and Victoria Nyanza. He later went to Damascus, and then to Trieste where he died.
