General Information:

In 1896 the Society of Friends sent him, with one other, to investigate the conditions of slaves in Zanzibar and Pemba where the legal status of slavery was abolished a few months after their arrival. Subsequently he and his wife purchased a small estate for the accommodation of runaway slaves and devoted all their time to missionary, educational and medical work in Zanzibar and Pemba.
